Scabies, usually referred to as the 7 year itch, is a contagious, itchy skin disease. It's from a mite called Sarcoptes scabiei, a really minute and almost invisible parasite with 8 legs, which burrows within a person's skin and causes extreme allergic itching. It is the female mites which feed off us; they're mainly 0,3 mm to 0,4 mm long and the males are approximately half the length.

A magnifying glass or microscope can be used to see the mites. Although mites can survive in temperatures below 20 degrees C, they cannot move in such conditions. They also cannot fly or jump, thus, they just crawl. This crawling can be really disconcerting and painful sometimes, as they would feed on the blood and flesh of the host to be able to lay eggs.

Scabies is something that can be passed on to another person through skin on skin contact. Scabies is spread, though, via really close contact between persons, so it can't be contracted by hanging one's jacket next to one belonging to someone with scabies, or by simply shaking hands. Scabies are found in various places. However, in the cases of infants and young children, scabies appears on the head, face, neck, palms, and the soles of the feet. A convenient method of scabies treatment is scabicide drugs. Scabies treatment involves the use of permethrin and ivermectin. Permethrin is the best scabies treatment; it is applied everywhere but your head and you wash it off in 8 hours. Alternately, a treatment for crusted scabies is ivermectin- an oral anti-parasitic medicine.

Other scabies treatments include lindane, crotamiton, sulfur preparations and antihistamines. Lindane is like permethrin, which is applied in the same manner, however, it can cause seizure if it is applied in a very irritated or wet skin. Cortamiton, on the other hand, is both a lotion and cream while sulfur prepared in petrolatum is used as a cream and is known to be the most traditional form of scabies treatment. Antihistamines just relieves the itching.

Scabie treatment would be ineffective if only one person is treated, as every infected person in the community should be treated to avoid re-infection. It is also important to disinfect household items, such as, linens, bedclothes, wardrobe, furniture, rugs, etc. as these mites do not live long away from humans.
